Option

The exclusive right, usually obtained for a fee, to buy or sell something within a specified time at a set price.

Story option

The story author agrees that for a certain price, he will give the producer the exclusive option to purchase the story, at a designated price, sometime in the future. The producer is not bound to ever make the film or buy the rights; he simply acquires the right to do so later.

The producer may option a story, and then acquire the rights. Even when a film is based on the unwritten life story of someone, the producer must still acquire the rights to that story from the person or the person’s heirs.

Screenplay option

The screenwriter agrees that for a certain price, he will give the producer the exclusive option to purchase the screenplay, at a designated price, sometime in the future. The producer is not bound to ever make the film or buy the rights; he simply acquires the right to do so later.
