Kicker lighting is the use of two key lights positioned above and behind the subject. The subject's face is allowed to fall into the shadows while the two key lights illuminate its sides. The shadow areas are then opened up by bounced or reflected light.
This type of lighting creates a highlight outline of the subject. It can be considered an inverse variation of Rembrandt lighting, with the broad side of the subject’s back being lighted.
